Steel House Alpha
An award-winning urban infill project demonstrating precision prefabrication in challenging conditions.
Steel House Alpha answered a seemingly impossible brief: create a three-bedroom family home on a narrow 6.5-metre-wide urban section with just 2 metres of access along one boundary. Traditional construction methods would have required crane access and months of disruptive on-site work. Our solution: complete modular prefabrication. The entire home was manufactured in five modules at our Auckland facility, transported overnight, and assembled on-site in just 72 hours. Neighbours reported minimal disruption, and the clients moved in 11 weeks after signing the contract. Despite its compact footprint, the home feels remarkably spacious. A double-height void above the living area draws light deep into the floor plan, while a rooftop terrace provides outdoor living space that the narrow section couldn't otherwise accommodate. The home won the 2023 NZIA Auckland Architecture Award for Housing, with judges praising its "innovative approach to urban densification and the exceptional quality of prefabricated construction."

"We were told our section was unbuildable. Structura proved everyone wrong — and the result is the home we always dreamed of but never thought possible."
